Chapter Highlights
The following highlights summarise the design, implementation, and impact of the Foundations in Science and Mathematics (FSM) program as a sustainable and equity-focused STEM outreach model. The chapter highlights FSM’s role in broadening access to STEM learning while supporting the professional development of graduate instructors.
- Program Origins and Purpose – Introduces FSM as a graduate-student-led outreach program launched in 2010 at Indiana University, aimed at broadening access to high-quality STEM education for middle and high school students.
- Curriculum and Pedagogical Approach – Highlights student-centred, practice-oriented enrichment courses in mathematics, science, robotics, and coding that connect academic rigor with real-world relevance.
- Program Organization and Partnerships – Examines key organisational components, including instructor recruitment and preparation, curriculum development, and sustained collaboration with local schools, families, and community stakeholders.
- Equity and Accessibility Measures – Describes strategies such as hybrid delivery formats, financial support mechanisms, and culturally responsive outreach practices designed to reduce barriers to participation and promote inclusive STEM learning opportunities.
